Obituary for Otha Blair "Git" Giddens Jr.

Otha Blair "Git" Giddens Jr.
Deacon Otha Blair Giddens Jr. went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 23rd 2017. Otha, “Git” as he was affectionately known by family and friends, was born on October 22nd 1931 to the late Otha B Giddens Sr. and Mary Ellen Giddens in Belle Haven, Virginia.

Otha was educated in the Accomack County school system. He graduated from Mary N. Smith high school in 1950. Shortly afterwards he joined the US Army, where he served in the Korean War and received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged as a Tech Sergeant on February 12th 1954.

Upon his return to the states he married his high school sweetie pie, Helen Downing on July 2nd 1955, and moved to New York and had three children, Carl, Michael, and Barbara. Git and Helen joined Antioch Baptist Church in Brooklyn New York and were faithful members. Git was ordained as a Deacon on November 18th 1989.

He was employed by Gallo Wine Truck Company as a driver for over 30 years. Git was a loving and kind person with a smile that could light up a room. He enjoyed watching westerns, eating a hot home cooked meal and being surrounded by his family whom he cherished dearly.

Git was preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty-three years, Helen Giddens; two sons, Michael and Carl Giddens; three sisters, Gladys, Ruth, and Margaret Giddens; and one brother, Julius Giddens.

Git leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Barbara Parker and granddaughter, Shareen Hill, both of Marlton, NJ; daughter-in-law, Christal Giddens of Columbia, SC; one sister, Doris Allen of Hamilton NJ; five additional grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great, great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
