Obituary for Mallie Elizabeth "Liz" Morris (Smith)

Mallie Elizabeth "Liz" Morris (Smith)
Mallie Elizabeth Smith Morris, was the only child of Alice Elizabeth Smith and Leon West. She was born of February 11, 1939 in Nassawadox, Virginia. As a little girl, she attended the public schools in Accomack County, Virginia. She always dreamed of one day moving to the big city, so at the tender age of eighteen she moved to New York City. There she was employed as a live-in housekeeper for five years.

At the age of twenty-five, she decided to make Newark, New Jersey home for her family. Although, she only had an eighth-grade education, she enrolled in the Manpower Training Program, which enabled her to start her successful career at the Prudential Insurance Company. She began her career there as a mailroom clerk and was promoted as supervisor in the Common Stock Department, and finally as a financial stock analyst.

In 1977, Elizabeth joined New Jerusalem Baptist Church and gave her life to the Lord and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She retired from Prudential Insurance Company in 1995 to spend time with her family. Although she had retired, Elizabeth always wanted to help others and was an active participant in her community. If there was anything that concerned her, she would not hesitate to write a letter to her councilman, mayor, senator, or even the president. She taught us the power of letter writing. In 1998, she became actively involved in the Grandparents Anonymous Program. Elizabeth began volunteering at the East Orange Child Development Corporation in 2004. There she made such a positive and profound impact on the staff and students, that she was offered a permanent position. She remained there until her health began to fail at the beginning of 2017.

Elizabeth was a fighter. She remained strong and was determined to keep her independence, even in the end. She was courageous, but most of all she was loved.

Gone before her and welcoming her home with open arms are her beloved mother, Alice Elizabeth Smith Giddens; her fondly remembered one and only son, Melvin Thomas Smith; three grandchildren; and four wonderful aunts.

In her absence, she leaves behind a lasting and wonderful legacy: four beautiful daughters, Patricia Diane Smith of Newark, NJ, Cynthia Eloise Smith of Hampton, VA, Kassandra Renee Smith of Pungoteague, VA, and Lynette Tawann Smith of Newark, NJ. Elizabeth is also survived by her incredibly spirited grandchildren: Tony Christopher Orlando Collins of Washington, DC, Kyle Allyster Collins of Las Vegas, NV, Ja’-nyne Elizabeth Collins of Acworth, GA, D’Angelo Shaylun Collins of Newark, NJ, Lenny Stephon Anthony Smith of Las Vegas, NV, Alajuwaan Likir Smith of Las Vegas, NV, Tyniesha Pamela Washington of Hampton, VA, and Al-Hadid Sherrod Smith of Newark, NJ, whom she raised. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Terique Melvin Marquis Collins and Kylie Lyn Collins, both of Acworth, GA, and a host of cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Mom/Grandma was admired and loved by all who knew her. She was a wise and strong woman, a pioneer, but most of all a true friend. There was never a dull moment when in her presence. She was never one to sugarcoat anything for us; she always told it like it was. She always allowed us to follow our own paths in life, but if we fell, she was always there to dust us off and wouldn’t hesitate to chastise us if we needed it. If anyone needed clothes, she clothed them. If anyone needed food, she fed them. If anyone needed anything, she was there with grace and understanding. Completing every task at hand, she quickly got the job done. We will hold dear the talks around the dinner table, the laughter when watching her favorite sitcom, Golden Girls. We will forever hear the echo of her voice and remember her endearing smile. We will lovingly remember the frown on her face and the look in her eyes, when we asked ridiculous questions; those moments were priceless. All these things and more, we will greatly miss. What a joy and blessing she was to us. Until we are all together again, sleep well. Mom; sleep well, Grandma.
