Obituary for Garland W. "Ting" Kellam

Print
On Tuesday, September 25, 2018, Garland W. Kellam, fondly known as “Uncle Ting” or “Teen,” was summoned home to be with his Heavenly Father. Garland was born February 17, 1925 to the late Stanley Madre and Beatrice Kellam Madre in Accomack County, VA.

He received his education in the Accomack County public schools and was later drafted into the U.S. Navy, in which he served proudly.

After his tour in the Navy, he was employed as a horse groomer in Wardtown, VA and later his employer moved to New York, where he eventually retired from Yonkers Raceway in December 1991.

He was married to Mary Louise Kellam for 47 years who predeceased him August 27, 2008.

"Uncle Ting" was always serving his church as a former member of the trustee board, member of the United Methodist Men, member of the usher board, and helping to raise money until he became ill.

"Uncle Ting" loved music. Whenever someone called him in the evenings, he would often be listening to and watching gospel singers on TV.

If you were in conversation with him and he agreed with you, he would use his favorite phrase “yeah suh” in a loud strong voice, always smiling, and accompanied by a hearty laugh.

"Uncle Ting" knew who was in control. He believed in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Those left to remember him: goddaughter and niece, M. Diane Mapp of Philadelphia, PA; goddaughter and great niece, Maja Mapp-Luke of Philadelphia, PA; sister, Brenda (Rev. Willie) White, Sr. of Birdsnest, VA; step-sisters, Barbara Ann Tindley of Dagsboro, DE, Marie Garris of Lancaster, PA, Norma (Sammy) Drummond of Orlando, FL, and Asia Nock of Delmar, MD; step-brother, Wayne Taylor of Afton, VA; several nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews; one devoted cousin, Rev. Louis Carpenter; several devoted extended families, Custis, Conquest, Jubilee, Sharpe, phone buddies, and race track friends.
