Obituary for Leatha Mae "Leat" Miles

Leatha Mae Miles was born to the late James, Sr. and Gladys Miles in Onancock, Virginia. Leatha earned her wings on March 29, 2019 at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Leatha was educated in the public schools of Accomack County, where she graduated from Onancock High School. At a very young age, Leatha joined St. John’s Baptist Church in Onancock, Virginia. There she served on the Youth Choir, Senior Choir, Willing Workers, Missionary Society, Trustee Board, Kitchen Committee, and as the Assistant Corresponding Secretary. Leatha served diligently until her health began to fail.

Leatha, known by many names, such as “Leat,” “Shortie,” “Auntie,” “Community Mother,” and “Old Woman in a Shoe,” was an avid sports player. She played softball in high school and continued her love for the game by playing for various teams with Accomack County Parks & Recreation. The Blue Jays, Barbettes, Kings & Queens, and Rejects, were just a few of those teams.
Leat was employed at Holly Farms, now Tyson Foods, for twenty-five years until her health began to fail. Some of her hobbies consisted of Bingo, playing Spades and Knock, Search-a-word puzzle books, and putting together 1,000 piece puzzles.

Leat was like the old woman in the shoe, who had so many kids she didn’t know what to do. That was the warm, inviting spirit that she had, that made everyone gravitate to her. Leat came in contact with many people and gained many friends.

Leat was preceded in death by her nephew, James Lee Drummond, Jr. and sister-in-law, Joyce Ann Miles.

Leatha leaves many beautiful memories to be cherished by her daughter, Tamika (Derrick, Sr.) Colona of Onancock, VA; two grandchildren, Malaya and Derrick, Jr. “DJ”; two brothers, James Miles and Perry (Frances) Bailey; two sisters, Barbara Davis and Teresa (Keith) Kellam; one special sister, JoAnn (Sherman) Williams; one uncle, Paul Savage; one aunt, Helen Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, community kids, and friends.
