“Coco,” as he was affectionately known, was educated in the public schools of Accomack County, where he was a lifelong resident.
Cornelous joined the Jerusalem Baptist Church in his younger years, where he served on the Usher Ministry. Later, he recommitted his life to Christ and was part of the Men’s Ministry until his health begin to fail.
Cornelous started working as a child in the fields and later on the farm. He was employed in the poultry industry as a chicken catcher for over forty years. Coco enjoyed eating his wife’s home cooked meals; he always volunteered to be the test taster. He loved to be outside in his garden and cutting grass. One of his favorite pastimes was attending the Jerusalem Senior Center each week. Coco would help anyone who asked. If he saw you anywhere in his car, he definitely blew his horn and spoke to you.
He will be remembered as man who loved his family and made many sacrifices to help nurture his children and grandchildren’s dreams. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Cornelous was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Jean Fiddemon and one brother, Fredrick Fiddemon.
He leaves to cherish fond memories: his companion and wife of over fifty years, Alice Goffin; three children, Alvin (Laurie) Downing Jr. of Trenton, NJ, Curtis (Queenie) Downing of Temperanceville, VA, and Ruth Tankard of Nelsonia, VA; nine grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; four sisters, Eula Fiddemon, Joyce Fiddemon, Mable (Stanley) Garrison, and Arliece (Edward) Kellam; two brothers, Minister Barry Fiddemon and Robert (Brandy) Fiddemon; two brothers-in- law, Paul ( Jacqueline) Brown and John Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
