Obituary

Dorethea Ann Matthews was born on September 9, 1953 to the late Louis Rogers, Sr. and Mary Riley. She departed this life at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia on May 21, 2020.

Dorethea, affectionately known as “Doe,” received her education in the Accomack County Public School system. She worked at the Veteran’s Memorial Home in Vineland, New Jersey for over twenty years, as a head cook. Later, she transferred to the Children’s Residential Center, also in Vineland, New Jersey. She worked there until her health began to fail, resulting in her retirement; thus, she decided to return to Virginia.

Doe was a mom to all; at a young age, she helped raise her siblings, while her mother worked. She also adopted her niece, Tycole, and raised her three grandchildren, Da’Ron, Dionja, and Z’Core. She didn’t hesitate to watch anyone’s kids. If your child was ever in her presence, she was sure to give them a beautiful experience and a life full of adventures. Doe stayed on the go. If she wasn’t out shopping for designer labels, she was traveling, visiting the casino, or home cooking a “finger-licking” meal, that everyone loved.

Dorethea was a perfect example of following your passion; she loved everything she did and it showed.

Dorethea was preceded in death her husband, Harry Thomas Matthews, Jr. and her parents.

She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Vivian Drummond of Onancock, VA and Tycole Banks of Exmore, VA; three grandsons, Da’Ron (Dykeya) Newman, Z’Core Drummond, both of Onancock, VA, and Kenryan Banks of Exmore, VA; four granddaughters, Dionja Drummond of Onancock, VA, Kenya Banks, Iliah Banks, and Imani Banks, all of Exmore, VA; three great-grandchildren, Da’Niya, Da’Jhan, and Tristian; two sisters, Deshirley Riley of Withams, VA and Doris (Thomas) Neal of Salisbury, MD; seven brothers, Danny (Ernestine) Rogers of Glassboro, NJ, Louis (Wanda) Rogers of Bronx, NY, Anthony Hakim (Beverly) Rogers, Paul Rogers, both of Brooklyn, NY, Elvis (Agatha) Drummond of Vineland, NJ, James Lee Drummond of Onancock, VA, and Sherwood (Barbara) Riley of Onancock, VA; special friends, Noah and Debra Matthews; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

    Notes
In the light of the evolving situation with COVID-19 virus, we are making adjustments to adapt to the current health emergency. In order to reduce the spread of the virus in our community, we are limiting the public’s access to our facility. We will continue to serve our families with the utmost dignity, as well as maintain the safety guidelines provided by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). We have received notification from the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers that funeral homes are included in the Governors Executive Order Fifty-Three (2020), which imposes the following restriction: Effective 11:59 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, 2020 until 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2020, all public and private in person gatherings of 10 or more individuals are prohibited. In accordance with the Governor's Executive Order Fifty-Three, Cooper & Humbles Funeral Co., Inc. will comply and hold all services private until further notice. We will not have any public viewings. In an effort to accommodate family and friends, we are posting photos and the funeral/graveside service video of your loved ones on their respective Book of Memory pages on our website, www.cooperandhumbles.com. This will allow you to have a lasting memory picture and attend the service virtually. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time and as soon as this matter is resolved, we will resume our normal practices.

I'm so sorry to have lost you big Sis. I cherish the memory of Sesame Place over 25 years ago. I pray comfort to all of the family who are feeling this, including a prayer for myself. Danny, Hakim, Louie, and Paul, Dorethea's brothers, from NY & NJ, all send our deepest condolences and love to you all. When this smoke clears, I hope to see everyone. Peace & Blessings,

Hakim
